This book examines negative makers in 23 typologically diverse languages. The investigation reveals a four-way classification of negative markers and lays bare meaningful syncretism patterns between the four types of markers. These patterns show that morphology is not arbitrary, but tracks the natural scope of negation. In addition, it is argued how the syncretism patterns can be used to decompose the negative marker in submorphemic features.
