Edward Washburn Hopkins (1857–1932) was a prominent American Sanskrit scholar, born in Northampton, Massachusetts. He earned his Ph.D. at Leipzig after graduating from Columbia College. Hopkins taught at Columbia and Bryn Mawr before joining Yale University as a professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology in 1895. He served as secretary of the American Oriental Society and edited its journal, making significant contributions to early Sanskrit literature studies. His notable works include "Caste in Ancient India" (1881), "Religions of India" (1895), "Epic Mythology" (1915), and "History of Religions" (1918), reflecting his expertise in Indian culture and religious studies.
