The Old English Baron is a Gothic novel written by Clara Reeve and first published in 1778. The novel is set in medieval England and tells the story of Sir Philip Harclay, who inherits an estate and title from his father. However, his inheritance is contested by the villainous Lord Lovel, who has his own designs on the estate. The novel is a classic example of Gothic literature, with its emphasis on mystery, suspense, and supernatural elements.Also included in this edition is The Castle of Otranto, another Gothic story written by Horace Walpole and first published in 1764. The Castle of Otranto is considered the first Gothic novel and tells the story of the tyrannical Lord Manfred, who seeks to secure his family's power by marrying his son to the daughter of a nobleman. However, his plans are thwarted by supernatural occurrences and a curse that seems to be haunting the castle.This edition of The Old English Baron and The Castle of Otranto was published in 1883 and features both novels in their original form. It is a must-read for fans of Gothic literature and those interested in the history of the genre.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
