An influential biographical dictionary known as the Oriental Biographical Dictionary, originally titled The Oriental Biographical Dictionary, was authored by Thomas William Beale. This dictionary encompassed the lives of notable individuals from the Islamic, Persian, and Indian realms. It was published posthumously by The Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1881. Later, an updated and expanded edition was released in London by W. H. Allen in 1894. Both editions were edited by Henry Keene, who was a Fellow of the University of Calcutta and also contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography.

Thomas William Beale, a knowledgeable scholar, served as a clerk at the Office of the Board of Revenue, N.W.P. He played a crucial role in supporting Sir H. M. Elliot in his research on the history of Muslims in India. Beale himself authored the Miftah-ul-Tawarikh and also penned an Oriental Biographical Dictionary. Henry George Keene CIE (1826–1915) was an English historian specializing in the study of medieval and modern India. He served in the Bengal Civil Service from 1847 to 1882, with his notable role as Superintendent at Dehra Doon during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
