George Hathaway started playing Soccer in 1959 as a freshman at Suffield Academy in Suffield, Connecticut. During his years at Suffield he played Halfback (Middie) and was captain for two years. Later in life, his children, Katy, Jordan and Alex, became involved in Soccer and played for many years. During this time Mr. Hathaway volunteered as a Coach in the North Andover Soccer Association in North Andover, Massachusetts. Apart from Coaching, he continued to play Soccer as an adult in both indoor and outdoor men's leagues until the year 2000 when he broke two ribs in an indoor game. Apparently, Mr. Hathaway had had enough experience playing the game and elected to retire to the sidelines. Off and on over the years, Mr. Hathaway found himself explaining the rules and peculiarities of the game to other adults on the sidelines. His sketches and diagrams were first used to help parents better understand Soccer. They later became a guide for teams he coached and, today, has evolved into "The Parents' Guide to Youth Soccer."
