This book elucidates the principal aspects and characteristics of secondary school mathematics teaching and learning in China. It combines the cultivation of students' mathematical abilities with the improvement of teaching skills, and explores from both theory and practice to create mathematical pedagogy which has been widely recognized by experts in this field. This book presents a number of mathematics teaching principles and methods, and has been used as an important resource book for mathematics teachers' education.

Shizao Zhang has devoted his life to teaching mathematics and doing relevant researches. Up till now, he has published 8 monographs, 7 textbooks and more than 80 academic papers as well. He worked as an editor and a researcher, and taught more than 10 mathematics courses in secondary schools, colleges and universities. Because of his outstanding contributions to mathematics education in terms of disciplinary development, curriculum, and textbook compilation, he is honourably recognized by the majority of peers as the representative of Chinese mathematics education in the late 30 years in the 20th century. He retired as Professor of Mathematics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Yancheng Teachers University in 2006.
