The Ph.D. Trajectory: A Step Towards a Successful Journey enumerates certain guidelines for the successful achievement of the goal of obtaining a Ph.D. degree. It provides various guidelines and tips for college teachers on how to pursue their Ph.D. degree. It will be helpful in improving the quality of the teaching-learning process and effectiveness of classroom instructions in Higher Educational Institutions, Colleges, and Universities. There are two aspects of doing Ph.D. One is concerned with the “human factor”, viz. emotional and psychological aspects, and the other is “scientific” and “technical” aspects. The scientific and technical aspects involved are disciplinary in nature: problem identification, objectives, research methodology, experimentation, data analysis, interpretation, and publication of research findings. Both aspects are highly interrelated; in addition, the guide and the candidate (viz. college faculty) are individually and collectively responsible for the successful outcome of this joint endeavour. Since Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and University Grants Commission (UGC) have made Ph.D. a mandatory qualification for college teachers for teaching in the university, this book will be highly beneficial for aspiring college teachers and teacher-researchers in their career advancement and professional development.

Dr. M. Adithan, Professor Emeritus and Director, Academic Staff College at VIT University, Vellore, has Ph.D. from I.I.T. Madras. He was an UNESCO Fellow at Ohio State University, U.S.A., and has more than four decades of experience in teaching, research, training, and faculty development. He was a visiting Professor at Brigham Young University, U.S.A. and at University of Technology, Malaysia. He has guided many teacher-researchers at I.I.T. Madras, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (N.I.T.T.T.R), Chandigarh, and V.I.T., Vellore. He has conducted many new and innovative Faculty Development Programmes for college faculty and has published many papers on Teacher Education, Training, and Research.
