The Physician In Spite Of Himself is a comedic play written by French playwright Moliere, whose real name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin. The play was first performed in 1666 and tells the story of a woodcutter named Sganarelle who is mistaken for a doctor by a wealthy man named Geronte. Sganarelle, who has no medical training, is forced to pretend to be a physician in order to help Geronte's daughter, who has been struck mute. Despite his lack of knowledge, Sganarelle manages to cure the young woman by using a variety of absurd and comical methods. Along the way, he also manages to outsmart several other characters who are trying to expose his fraud. The Physician In Spite Of Himself is a satirical look at the medical profession and the idea of expertise, and is considered one of Moliere's most popular and enduring plays.Sganarelle.
