The "literary non-fiction" essays in this book are neither book "reviews" nor scholarly reports, though the author doesn't hesitate to interpret. They are merely one reader's take on particular works of literature and the pleasures they have provided from a first reading or, more often, from rereading. There are also a few essays on non-fictional topics that simply grabbed the author's attention; for example, "George Will is Into Baseball," "Great Monuments Are Not Always Made of Stone," "The Miracle of Haiku Poetry," and "The Rocker Wanderings of an Incurable Train Traveler."

Charles M. (Tod) Oliver is Professor of English Emeritus at Ohio Northern University, where he taught from 1965-1992. In retirement, he and his wife, Helen, moved to Charlottesville, VA, where he has written three books for publication: Ernest Hemingway A to Z: The Essential Reference to the Life and Work (1999), Critical Companion to Walt Whitman (2006), and Critical Companion to Ernest Hemingway (2007). Oliver has also edited two other books: A Moving Picture Feast: The Filmgoer's Hemingway (1989) and Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms: A Documentary Volume (Dictionary of Literary Biography, Vol. 308 [2005]).
