“Public policy is not just about shaping systems - it is about shaping oneself.”

In The Policy Self, Nitin Saluja distills nearly two decades across government, industry, and diplomacy into a rare exploration of the inner life of policy work. This is not a book of famous case studies. It is a guided tour of the quieter forces that shape influence: how practitioners think under pressure, choose their words, read a room, time an intervention, and hold their ground in ambiguity.

Across ten reflective chapters, Saluja distills what it truly means to practice policy as a discipline of patience and purpose. From the rhythm of negotiation to the ethics of tone, from the psychology of meetings to the art of timing, this book offers a deeply considered account of how effective professionals operate in the spaces between institutions, ideas, and intent.

For public servants, corporate affairs leaders, diplomats, consultants, and students of governance, The Policy Self offers something increasingly rare: the feel of mentorship. Calm. Precise. Unhurried. It is an invitation to see policy not just as a profession, but as a way of being. Where clarity becomes influence, restraint becomes strength, and meaning is found in the space between intention and outcome.

Nitin Saluja is a seasoned public policy professional with nearly two decades of experience working at the intersection of technology, governance, and society. His work focuses on shaping regulatory environments, strengthening institutional engagement, and enabling businesses and governments to navigate complex policy landscapes in India and globally.Over the course of his career, he has led high impact policy engagement across central and state governments on issues spanning e-commerce, digital media, taxation, and emerging technology platforms. He has held senior policy roles at Amazon, Facebook, and ByteDance, working on both established sectors and new regulatory frontiers such as e pharmacy and agriculture, and helping shape pathways for evolving business models.

His experience also includes advisory work with the World Bank and Ernst and Young, as well as contributions to India’s Digital India programme through the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Across these roles, he has worked closely with policymakers, industry leaders, and multilateral institutions to advance responsible innovation and support institution building.

Known for his ability to translate complexity into clarity, Nitin brings a practitioner’s understanding of how policy is shaped through real world decisions, negotiations, and trade-offs. His work reflects a consistent focus on building trust, aligning stakeholders, and strengthening the interface between government and industry.

He holds a degree in Economics from Hans Raj College, University of Delhi, and a Master’s in Public Management and Governance from the London School of Economics. Recognised as a LinkedIn Top Voice in Public Policy, he writes widely on the craft of policy, offering a distinctive perspective on how professionals think, exercise judgment, and operate within institutions.
