In the depiction of temporal discontinuity in film, montage is used to seek a fluid connection between time and space, with the aim of establishing a relationship between these two elements. To this end, specific stylistic devices are employed to represent leaps in time. These include flashbacks, temporal overlaps, jump cuts and match cuts, time-lapse and slow-motion shots, as well as sound. They allow the viewer to follow the continuous flow of the narrative and enable a sense of temporal orientation. A key component of this work is the short film *Lebensbilder*, which is linked to this study and is discussed here. The film brings to life the memories of an elderly Berlin woman, giving them artistic form and, through the use of these stylistic devices, a temporal sequence.
