The Provoked Wife is a play written by John Vanbrugh in 1777. It is a comedy that explores the themes of love, marriage, and infidelity in the upper-class society of 18th century England. The play centers around the character of Lady Brute, who is trapped in a loveless marriage with her philandering husband, Sir John Brute. Lady Brute is provoked by her husband's behavior and begins to explore her own desires and sexuality. She is courted by two suitors, Heartfree and Constant, who offer her the possibility of true love and happiness. However, Lady Brute's attempts to break free from her unhappy marriage are complicated by the interference of her scheming sister-in-law, Belinda, and the jealousy of Sir John.
