“Half of happiness is the recognition that we are happy; and half of misery is the forgetting how many causes of happiness we have.”

For many, the quest for happiness is a never-ending journey. The Pursuit of Happiness by Daniel G. Brinton transforms the reader's understanding of true happiness and combines personal anecdotes, scientific research and profound insights to help uncover the mysteries of happiness. First published in 1893, The Pursuit of Happiness goes beyond generic advice and deconstructs its fundamental existence, explaining its definition, relative value, distribution as well as the role of our mental or bodily constitution and physical surroundings. From nurturing meaningful relationships to discovering your life's purpose, Brinton provides actionable steps with a delightful blend of wisdom, humour and relatability. Whether you're feeling stuck, seeking fulfilment or simply curious about the nature of happiness, this book is your guide to unlocking the secrets of lasting happiness and inner joy."

Endorsements

“… the phrase, “Happiness is so fragile that one risks the loss of it by talking of it,” is abolished by Dr. Brinton in this pleasantly-written book.”

—The New York Times

  • Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837–1899), an American archaeologist, ethnologist and linguist, was born in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Yale in 1858, he explored Europe and served as a surgeon during the Civil War. Despite setbacks, including a sunstroke at Missionary Ridge, Brinton pursued a career in medicine and later became a professor of ethnology and archaeology in Philadelphia. His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to Mesoamerica, where he unearthed ancient artifacts and delved into the histories of civilizations like the Aztecs and Maya. Brinton’s linguistic studies illuminated the intricacies of Native American languages, leaving a lasting impact on academic circles. His legacy endures as a fearless explorer and unrivaled contributor to the understanding of ancient cultures.

Some of Brinton’s noteworthy works published posthumously:
    • Notes on the Floridian Peninsula (1859)
    • American Hero-Myths: A Study in the Native Religions of the Western Continent (1882)
    • Nagualism. A Study in Native American Folk-lore and History (1894)
    • A Guide-Book of Florida and the South (1869)
    • Essays of an Americanist (1890)
    • Religions of Primitive People (1897)
    • Races and Peoples: lectures on the science of ethnography (1890)
