The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a novel written by Robert Tressell and first published in 1914. The book is a semi-autobiographical account of Tressell's experiences as a house painter and decorator in the early 20th century. The story is set in the fictional town of Mugsborough and follows the lives of a group of working-class men who are struggling to make ends meet in a capitalist society.The main character, Frank Owen, is a socialist who tries to educate his fellow workers about the injustices of the system they are trapped in. He argues that the workers are being exploited by their employers and that they should unite to fight for their rights. However, most of his colleagues are too busy trying to survive to listen to his message.The book is a scathing critique of capitalism and the way it dehumanizes workers. Tressell portrays the bosses as greedy and heartless, while the workers are depicted as being trapped in a cycle of poverty and despair.
