“The most valuable of all capital is that invested in human beings”

Principles of Economicsby Alfred Marshal is a foundational text that continues to shape our understanding of economic theory. First published in 1890, Marshall's magnum opus revolutionised the field by compiling key concepts such as supply and demand, marginal utility, cost of production and distribution, which became the cornerstones of contemporary microeconomics and continue to influence modern business strategy. Inspiring generations of economists and students alike, the book remains as relevant today as it was over a century ago, acting as an indispensable guide for those seeking a profound understanding of the principles that govern our economic world.

“Its publication revolutionized economic thought...”

—The Times

“… at once recognised as marking a new era in constructive economics.”

—Manchester Guardian

Plato (circa 427–347 BCE) is a towering figure in Western philosophy, revered for his profound insights into ethics, politics, metaphysics and epistemology. Born into an aristocratic Athenian family, Plato was deeply influenced by his mentor Socrates, whose dialectical method and pursuit of truth left an indelible mark on his philosophical journey. After Socrates’ death, he travelled extensively, studying other renowned thinkers of the time. When he returned to Athens he founded the Academy, one of the earliest known institutions of higher learning in the Western world, where he nurtured a generation of influential philosophers, including Aristotle.

Plato’s philosophical corpus, primarily presented in dialogue form, explores a wide range of themes, from the nature of justice and the ideal state (as depicted in The Republic) to the nature of reality and the theory of forms. His works often feature Socrates as the protagonist engaged in dialectical exchanges with interlocutors, offering readers a dynamic and multifaceted exploration of complex philosophical concepts.

Plato’s enduring legacy extends far beyond the confines of ancient Greece, influencing countless generations of scholars, thinkers and theologians across cultures and centuries. His unwavering commitment to the pursuit of truth, virtue and the good life continues to resonate with readers and scholars alike, cementing his status as one of the most influential philosophers in human history.

The exact order in which Plato’s dialogues were written is not known. His works are usually grouped into Early (sometimes known as Transitional), Middle and Late periods.
