This book serves as an introduction to the Rock-Temples of Elephanta or Ghârâpurî, situated approximately six miles from Bombay. The island of Elephanta consists of two hills separated by a narrow valley. The name "Elephanta" was derived from a large stone elephant that once stood on the island. The main attraction is the Great Cave, a massive rock-cut temple oriented to the north, resembling a nuptial hall called a chaori. The primary entrance also faces north, leading into a cavernous hall supported by substantial columns. The book offers a comprehensive description, complemented by appended notes at the end. These rock-temples, believed to have been carved between the 4th and 7th centuries AD, are often attributed to an early Kalacuri king's reign in the Konkan region during the third quarter of the 6th century.

James Burgess (1832–1916) was a significant 19th-century Indian archaeologist and the founder of The Indian Antiquary in 1872. Born in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, he received his education at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. His career involved educational work in Calcutta and Bombay, serving as Secretary of the Bombay Geographical Society and heading the Archaeological Survey in Western and South India. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Edinburgh in 1881. His notable publications include "The Temples of Shatrunjaya," "The Rock Temples of Elephanta," "Buddhist Stupas of Amaravati," and many more. He passed away in Edinburgh in 1916.
