The play is set in Naples during the carnival season and follows the adventures of a group of English Cavaliers who have been banished from their homeland. The main character, Willmore, is a charming and witty adventurer who falls in love with a noblewoman named Hellena. However, Hellena is determined to marry for love rather than for social status, and she tests Willmore's sincerity and loyalty throughout the play. Meanwhile, Willmore's friend Belvile is also in love with a noblewoman named Florinda, but her father has arranged for her to marry a wealthy and powerful man. The play is filled with disguises, mistaken identities, and romantic entanglements, as the characters navigate the complexities of love and honor in a society that values wealth and status above all else.
