This intergenerational fable features a falling out between the irrepressible Scuter and his Grams, necessitating the subsequent intervention of Stan the SandMan and his daughter Z'mantha. These Gullah guides, weaving visions out of their deep interconnectedness to the rythms of the Low Country, enable Scuter to navigate unexplored territory and circumstances. Belle, the injured but indomitable loggerhead, becomes the unifying thread as information critical to reconciliation unfolds. The tale at its core intertwines education about the threatened life cycle of the sea turtle with exposure to a culture that has been similarly dispossessed and marginalized. It is a lesson for both children and adults, in hopes of enouraging and implementing change in midst of dynamic current interest in conservation and in the Gullah culture.

Al Hawkins: - Exposure to and experiences with the diverse people and lifestyles have all become the spring from which Al's inspiration flows. From primary and secondary education of the Kansas City, Missouri Public School System; studies at the Kansas City Art Institute, Drake University (BFA) under the tutelage of German artist Karl Mattern, and mentorship under Chicago artist Calvin Jones to years as art director to Senior VP creative executives in advertising agencies Foote, Cone and Belding; Leo Burnett Chicago and Leo Burnett Venezuela.

Carter, Robin M.: - Driven by a passion for the loggerhead sea turtle and hands-on experience as a certified sea turtle volunteer with SCUTE, I found the spark for this story in the Gullah connection. Queen Quet authenticated the Gullah dialogue and contributed elements of the Gullah/Geechee culture. We are hoping our collaboration will help to enlighten readers about the threatened status of both the sea turtles and the Gullah culture, thus encouraging advocacy for the continuation of both. The timing has never been more relevant or urgent with the hazards of climate change threatening the way of life for both.

Quet, Queen: - Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation is a native of St. Helena Island, SC. She is an author, preservationist, and performance artist. She is a founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition who in 1999 became the first Gullah to speak before the UN. She travels around the world to address issues of the threats to indigenous people from climate change and loss of habitat. She has written numerous books and has consulted on movies and historic documentaries.
