About The Book

Following The First Tri: As a Young Man, we pick up the story of self-described everyman, Dan Fishwick, just after his arrival at University School, an all-boys school in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The Second Tri: School Pictures captures images from Dan's life as a teacher. Just as photographs record how we change, the stories of his years in school also keep a record of broad shifts in our society. This gallery of school pictures takes us from the mid-1970s, with computers just on the horizon, to their ubiquitous presence in the new century. But most of all The Second Tri: School Pictures is Dan Fishwick's own story of his thirty years teaching, coaching, counseling, bus-driving and administrating. He gives us insight into what makes a school work, from headmaster to longtime maintenance staff, equals in the important ways. Fishwick discusses issues of discipline, the option of home-schooling, single-sex and co-education, comparisons to middle schools in France and China, and much more through his own experiences. The Second Tri is a celebration of the teaching life, but that's only the half of it. He balances that with other images - clear shots of family, travels, barn-building, auto-restoration and music. University School is in Shaker Heights, and Willoughby, always Dan's place, sixteen miles away. Covering that distance from where he came is a recurring theme because home, like the school, has deep roots.

About The Author

Fishwick, Dan: - Dan Fishwick has always come home to Willoughby, Ohio. At times, when opportunity strikes, from far away. He and his wife Carol led the first wave of baby-boomers and are now long-retired school teachers. They maintain a large garden at their old house on River Street and retreat to their vision of a poor man's Giverny on the forty acres in nearby Ashtabula County. Their three children and the grandchildren pull them far and wide across the globe. Mexico calls in the winter. Most other days Dan will be in his shop where he builds a variety of stringed instruments.
