The Seed of Race: An Essay on Indian Education is a work by Sir John George Woodroffe, written to address the challenges and issues related to the British colonial education system in India. Woodroffe critiques the Western-centric approach to education and emphasizes the importance of preserving India's cultural heritage and indigenous systems of learning. He argues that the Indian education system under British rule often undermined the nation's traditions, philosophies, and values, and calls for a reawakening of India's spiritual and intellectual roots. Woodroffe's essay advocates for a more holistic education system that integrates India's rich cultural legacy with modern knowledge.

Sir John George Woodroffe (1865–1936), also known by his pseudonym Arthur Avalon, was a British Orientalist and scholar of Hindu philosophy and yoga. Educated at Oxford and called to the Bar, he practiced law in Calcutta, eventually becoming Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Woodroffe made significant contributions to the study of Tantra and Hindu traditions, publishing influential works that introduced Western audiences to these subjects. His notable works, such as The Serpent Power, stimulated global interest in Hindu philosophy. After retiring, he served as Reader in Indian Law at Oxford University. He passed away in 1936 in France.
