Sheridan Road is a north-south route that parallels Lake Michigan's shoreline and Chicago's Outer Drive - and the Thornes are familiar with this area because this book is just one of several they have authored about Chicago and it's surroundings. In this story, a policeman on his nightly rounds in one of Chicago's most exclusive residential areas, hears a gunshot... But after a full investigation is completed, there is no sign of a corpse. This greatly affects the credibility of the policeman and neighbors, who claim to have heard the shot and the scuffle. To solve this mystery, the case is assigned to one of Chicago's finest, Detective Sergeant Dave Morgan. You don't have to be familiar with Chicago to enjoy this mystery, but if you are, you'll recognize a lot of places where the action takes place.

Notwithstanding the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thorne wrote several Chicago Detective Stories in the early 1900's, Magic Lamp Press was unable to learn anything about them. According to Federal copyright records, it appears that Mr. Thorne passed away and his widow Mabel renewed the copyright on one of their books in 1958. If you enjoy good mysteries, we strongly suggest that you read the books of Gene Grossman, another native Chicagoan, who after becoming a Marina del Rey transplant, wrote a twelve-book series entitled the Peter Sharp Legal Mysteries. All of the Peter Sharp books are available through Amazon, and details can be seen at www.legalmystery.com and they include "The Magician's Legacy," who some have judged to be the best 'locked-room' mystery of the century.
