The Song of Manik Chandra, translated and edited by George Abraham Grierson, is a lyrical medieval ballad rooted in Eastern Indian folk tradition. It narrates the legend of Manik Chandra, a merchant-prince whose piety, trials, and unwavering devotion to the deity Shiva guide his journey through hardship, sacrifice, and eventual redemption. The poem blends myth, morality, and local cultural motifs, reflecting the spiritual ethos and storytelling style of the region. Grierson’s work preserves the original poetic essence while offering linguistic and cultural insights, making it an important contribution to the study of Indian folk literature and devotional poetry.

Sir George Abraham Grierson (1851–1941) was a pioneering British linguist known for his extensive work on the languages of the Indian subcontinent. His magnum opus, the Linguistic Survey of India (1898–1928), cataloged over 450 languages and dialects. Grierson also authored key works on the Bihari languages, Kashmiri, and Pisaca dialects, contributing significantly to the study of South Asian linguistics. His Bihar Peasant Life (1885) provided a rich ethnographic account of rural life. Grierson’s research influenced the fields of linguistics and anthropology, preserving numerous languages and dialects through his meticulous surveys and publications.
