The Spirit Basket is a novel that portrays historical events experienced by an Alaska Native family for 270 years. In various locations in Alaska, generations of teenagers adjust from subsistence living to invasion by fur traders, the purchase of Alaska from Russia, gold-rush fever, WWII detention, huge earthquake, disastrous oil spill, and much more. Beginning in 1745, each chapter tells of culture change and adventure by a new generation of the same family. The story ends in the year 2015.

Marie Osburn Reid has loved watching changes take place in Alaska since it became a state in 1959. It was then that she moved from Truckee, CA to the "land of the midnight sun", married, and raised three children there. Besides "The Spirit Basket". her other novels include: "OVER RAINBOWS", an exciting mystery that endangers two young gals at the beginning of aviation in Alaska; "CLIMBING THE GREAT DENALI" has teens climb Mt. McKinley and inspire an injured child while remembering the first Athabascan climber to reach the summit; and "WHISPERS TO A DEAF DOG', dangerous racing adventures with sled dogs and an exceptional lead dog. All four of her novels are perfect for sixth grade readers and up. Each book is available in both paperback and e-books through Amazon.com.
