About The Book

The story of Fort St. George is an epitome, the story of the British connection with India, and the author is obviously proud of it. He may justly be proud not only of the story of the Fort, but also of his achievement in setting it down in a manner which will earn for him the gratitude of many. He is a South Indian enthusiast and his work is all the better for his enthusiasm for whether one agrees with him or not—and he personally consider that his claims for the achievements of South Indian troops are not in the least exaggerated—his enthusiasm gives him the power of enlivening the pages of history and of making the streets, walls and buildings of the Fort themselves tell their enthralling tale. He has set down also his unequalled knowledge and his enthusiastic love of the Fort in such extremely readable form. The book is the product of the extensive study of this Fort. The subject matter of the book is good and there is no statement in the book to which exception may justly be taken. It contains numerous illustrations which he has preserved from oblivion. The book is good for common readers.

About The Author

Lt. Col. Douglas Muir Reid, also known as DM Reid was born in 1894 in Morocco. He was educated in England and saw active service during the First World War. By the early 1920s, he was in Madras, working his way up to becoming a director at the leading firm – WA Beardsells. He was married in Madras to Olive in 1925, the niece of a powerful agent of the M&SM Railway, Sir Alfred Ashley Biggs. In 1936, Reid became a committee member of the exclusive Madras Chamber of Commerce and in 1938, its chairman. In that capacity he became a member of the Madras Legislative Council too.Reid was a keen rower and secretary of the Madras Boat Club. He was a talented painter too, specialising in watercolours. In 1945, he along with D.P. Roy Chowdhury, principal of the College of Arts and Crafts, founded the South Indian Society of Painters.
