The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates is a political treatise written by the famous English poet and author, John Milton. Originally published in 1649, the book is a defense of the regicide of King Charles I and a call for a republican form of government in England. Milton argues that kings are not divinely appointed and that they are subject to the same laws as their subjects. He also argues that the people have the right to overthrow a tyrannical monarch and establish a new government.
