Growing up in the 80s and 90s, a young boy takes the city bus on his own for the very first time. What should have been a simple ride home turns into an unexpected challenge when he realizes he is headed in the wrong direction.
With no adults nearby and no clear answers, he must slow down, pay attention to his surroundings, and figure out what to do next. As familiar landmarks fade and uncertainty sets in, the journey becomes less about getting home quickly and more about learning how to think through a problem calmly and responsibly.
The Long Way Home is the second book in The Thought Bubble early chapter book series, inspired by real childhood experiences from growing up in an urban neighborhood during the 1980s and 1990s. The story captures a time when independence was learned through everyday moments, public transportation was part of daily life, and children were trusted to navigate the world with awareness and common sense.
Written in a realistic, engaging style, this book emphasizes social-emotional learning themes such as problem-solving, self-awareness, listening to guidance, and learning from small mistakes without fear or shame. Rather than relying on fantasy or exaggeration, the story shows how imagination, observation, and calm thinking can help a child move forward when things do not go as planned.
Designed for readers ages 7 to 10, The Long Way Home works well for independent reading, classroom discussion, guided reading groups, and family story time. Educators and librarians will appreciate its clear structure, relatable voice, and strong opportunities for discussion around decision-making, responsibility, and confidence-building.
As part of The Thought Bubble series, this book continues a collection of stories that explore how children use thought, awareness, and imagination to navigate real-life situations. Each story stands on its own while reinforcing the idea that trouble often appears unexpectedly, and thoughtful problem-solving can lead the way forward.
Honest, grounded, and deeply relatable, The Long Way Home offers young readers a meaningful story about finding their way, both on the street and within themselves.
The Barber, Freezy: - James A. Freeman, known professionally as Freezy the Barber, is an author, educator, illustrator, and community storyteller from the South Bronx.Raised during the 1980s and 1990s, James grew up in the Bronx at a time shaped by hardship, creativity, and resilience. Though his neighborhood faced poverty and struggle, it was also a close-knit and structured world. Schools, churches, libraries, barbershops, basketball courts, and corner stores formed a complete ecosystem where children learned independence, responsibility, and how to move through the world with awareness.James discovered storytelling early. At the age of seven, his first poem was published with the encouragement of his mother, Alma Mae Mack, a poet and singer herself, who nurtured his voice and love of language. Books became both refuge and roadmap. Encyclopedias, biographies, and history texts fueled his curiosity and helped him understand the past, including stories of his own family and community. That early relationship with reading laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to literacy.Today, James is the creator of The Thought Bubble early chapter book series, including An Honest Day's Work and The Long Way Home. The series is inspired by real childhood experiences from the Bronx and is designed to help young readers build independence, awareness, and problem-solving skills. Rather than fantasy, these stories focus on everyday moments where children learn to think, observe, and make decisions for themselves. In addition to children's literature, James is the author of That Is Not My Name, Sweet Potato Pie for Santa, and Angalia Ju, as well as poetry collections including Painting with Words, Echoes in Ink, and the memoir Faded Into Truth. He is also a stand-up comedian whose work blends humor, honesty, and cultural reflection. As a longtime barber, James views the barbershop as both classroom and sanctuary. Listening, mentoring, and storytelling are central to his craft, and those same principles guide his writing. His work bridges education, creativity, and lived experience, making it accessible to children, parents, and educators alike.James now lives in North Carolina with his family and continues to write with a clear mission: to tell honest stories that help young people feel capable, seen, and understood. His books are written for independent reading, classroom discussion, and family story time, with the belief that literacy is not just about reading words, but learning how to navigate life.
