The Thousand and One Nights: The Arabian Nights' Entertainments, translated by Edward William Lane, is a celebrated English rendition of the classic Middle Eastern collection of folktales. Drawing from Arabic sources, Lane’s version includes stories of magic, adventure, love, and moral lessons, framed within the tale of Scheherazade, who tells a new story each night to delay her execution by King Shahryar. Lane's translation is notable for its scholarly notes, moral tone, and cultural insights, though he omitted some of the more erotic or supernatural elements. His work introduced Victorian readers to the rich tapestry of Islamic and Arab folklore.

Edward William Lane (1801–1876) was a renowned British orientalist, translator, and lexicographer celebrated for his deep engagement with Arabic language and culture. His major works include Arabic-English Lexicon, a monumental dictionary still referenced today, and Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians (1836), an ethnographic classic offering a vivid portrayal of 19th-century Egyptian life. Lane’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) brought Middle Eastern tales to Victorian audiences, though censored to fit moral norms. His Selections from the Kur-án and Arabian Society in the Middle Ages further reflect his scholarly dedication to Islamic culture, literature, and history.
