A Winter Story of Survival in the Blue Ridge Mountains
In the winter of 1850, the mountain closed, and a girl was left to decide what could be burned to stay alive.
Fifteen-year-old Ruthie Upton is alone in a remote cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains, snowed in with her younger brother as a brutal storm seals the pass. Their father has gone for help. Their mother is already gone. Food is scarce. Firewood is running out. Survival demands choices Ruthie never expected to make.
When a stranger enters the cabin in the night-silent, watchful, and dangerous by every story she has been taught-fear becomes a matter of life and death. What follows is not rescue or romance, but a fragile, wordless mercy that keeps two children alive through the storm.
As the mountain finally releases its hold, Ruthie must choose whether to trust the man who has given them everything and asked for nothing in return.
The Unreturned Mercy is a standalone historical story of survival, loss, and grace set in the nineteenth-century Blue Ridge Mountains. Told with restraint and emotional weight, it is a quiet exploration of mercy freely given-and the lives forever shaped by it.
Perfect for readers who appreciate historical fiction that lingers long after the final page.

As historical fiction authors, we are passionate about bringing the past to life through vivid storytelling and careful research. Our novels are inspired by real events, true resilience, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Each story blends fact and imagination, allowing readers to step into another time while finding connections that still resonate today.
We write historical fiction books that explore lives shaped by history-stories of courage, hope, and survival. From Southern landscapes to moments of national significance, my work seeks to honor the people who lived through hardship and left behind legacies of strength.
What draws us to historical storytelling is the way small, personal moments reflect larger truths. Whether inspired by family history, forgotten events, or places rich with heritage, my novels aim to weave together authenticity and emotion.
Readers who enjoy fiction inspired by true stories will find narratives that are both deeply human and rooted in history. Our books are not just about the past-they are about understanding how the past continues to shape who we are today.
Thank you for joining us on this journey through history and imagination. We hope my stories offer both an escape into another era and a reflection of the timeless resilience of the human spirit.
