Dear reader, If you are looking at this book right now, chances are you have a family member who is mentally ill. If that is true, I beg you to read on to learn what I call "The Ten Commandments of Loving the Mentally Ill" 1. This angry, irrational, repugnant person is not your child. It is the demon that lives within their mind. 2. Try not to feel guilty. This is perhaps the most difficult of goals, but you DID NOT cause this to happen to your child. 3. Talk about it to everyone. This may seem controversial, but it will help you and others in the end. 4. Keep a journal. You may need it for court someday, but it will also alleviate your frustration. 5. Go outdoors. Find solace in the beautiful world out there, even in small things like a blade of grass. 6. Take care of yourself. Eat, sleep, keep friendships alive, do things that bring you joy. 7. Start a new hobby or find new ideas in an old one. 8. Choose joy in spite of gritted teeth, even when it seems impossible. 9. You are not alone, but one of many who suffer from this terrible affliction. 10. Get educated. Read books. Join NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). Be an advocate. You will notice there are no words here recommending medicines, doctors, hospitals, treatments, etc. Every individual is different, whether caretaker or care receiver. The choices you make will be the best you can manage at any point in time. Thank you for reading my book. I send blessings for your happiness and hope, and I wish you luck in your endeavors.
