While the social environment of an individual is an essential component to understanding the management of psychiatric disorders, these aspects are often ignored due to the emphasis on pharmacological treatment in contemporary psychiatry. Social psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry concerned with the social dimension of mental health and healthcare. The 41 chapters of the textbook-authored by more than 50 experts from 13 countries and carefully edited by the five editors-present an invaluable assembly of material which can be used as fundamental teaching aid in the education of future and current health workers.

Rama Rao Gogineni, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the Cooper Medical School at Rowan University.

Andres J. Pumariega, MD, is a professor and chief of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Florida School of Medicine.

Roy Kallivayalil, MD, is a professor and the head of the department of psychiatry at Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvalla, India. He is Vice President (Asia Pacific) of the World Federation for Mental Health.

Marianne Kastrup, MD, is the former head of the National Centre for Transcultural Psychiatry, Copenhagen University Hospital, and the former medical director of International Research and Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims at Copenhagen University Hospital.

Eugenio M. Rothe, MD, is a triple board-certified (adult, child and adolescent and forensic) psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, researcher, and educator who is a founding faculty member and professor of psychiatry of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine/Florida International University.
