The Way of the World is a play written by William Congreve, first performed in 1700. It is a comedy of manners that satirizes the social conventions and hypocrisies of the upper class in Restoration England. The play centers around the romantic entanglements of two couples, Mirabell and Millamant, and Fainall and Mrs. Marwood, as they navigate the complexities of courtship and marriage. Mirabell must overcome the obstacles posed by Millamant's aunt, Lady Wishfort, who disapproves of the match, while Fainall and Mrs. Marwood plot to ruin Mirabell's chances with Millamant. Along the way, the play explores themes of love, sex, money, power, and deception, and features a cast of colorful characters, including a foppish suitor, a bumbling servant, and a witty gossip.
