The Yeoman of the Guard or The Maryman and His Maid is a comic opera written by William S. Gilbert. The story is set in the Tower of London during the Tudor era and revolves around the life of a Yeoman of the Guard named Wilfred Shadbolt, who is in love with a woman named Phoebe Meryll. However, Phoebe is in love with a prisoner in the Tower named Colonel Fairfax, who is sentenced to death for sorcery. In an attempt to save Fairfax, Phoebe and her father Sir Richard Meryll, who is also a Yeoman of the Guard, devise a plan to switch Fairfax with another prisoner. The plan is successful, and Fairfax escapes while the other prisoner is executed. Meanwhile, Wilfred discovers that Phoebe is in love with Fairfax and becomes jealous. In the end, all the characters are united and the opera ends on a happy note.
