Sie war mit ihrem Sohn ins Exil geflohen, nachdem sie einen verbrannten Körper als ihren ersten Ehemann identifiziert hatte. Ihre Hochzeit ein Jahr zuvor hatten Darja und Hermann nur im engsten Freundeskreis gefeiert, denn Darjas Familie würde wenig Verständnis für ihre neue Beziehung zu einem Deutschen haben, und Hermanns Familie hätte wenig Verständnis für seine Ehe mit einer Ausländerin, die aus erster Ehe ein Kind mitbringt. Hermann ist immer hilfsbereit, aber er übertreibt es, er möchte seine Frau zu einer richtigen Deutschen umerziehen, damit sie eines Tages die Anerkennung seiner Familie erhält.
