Während in der Vergangenheit hauptsächlich die Rolle der syntaktischen Informationen betont wurde, untersuchen neuere Studien immer mehr auch die Bedeutsamkeit weiteren linguistischen Inputs wie beispielsweise die der thematischen Rollen. Die zentrale Frage dabei lautet, ob die durch die thematischen Rollen erhaltenen Informationen lediglich als Unterstützung für die syntaktische Analyse herangezogen werden, oder ob sie selbstständig und unabhängig von der Syntax einen Beitrag zum Sprachverstehen leisten können. Für die Untersuchung dieser Fragestellung werden zunächst die wichtigsten Forschungsansätze zum Sprachverstehen vorgestellt. In der Literatur unterscheidet man traditionell zwischen modular-seriellen und interaktiv-parallelen Modellen. Während erstere davon ausgehen, dass bei einem ersten Analyseprozess ausschlie lich syntaktische Informationen für die Errichtung einer einzelnen Analyse herangezogen werden, nehmen letztere an, dass jede Art von linguistischem Input (d.h. sowohl syntaktische als auch semantische) parallel verarbeitet und für den Aufbau einer oder mehrerer Strukturen verwendet wird. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit widmet sich zwei Studien, welche ihren Fokus auf thematische Informationen beim Sprachverstehen richten. Die Arbeit von Scheepers et al. (2000) untersucht, inwieweit syntaktische Funktionen mit thematischen Rollen verbunden werden können. Der von den Autoren vertretene Ansatz kann als interaktiv bezeichnet werden, da davon ausgegangen wird, dass sowohl die strukturbasierten als auch die Verb-spezifischen Informationen gleicherma en am Aufbau der Satzstruktur beteiligt sind.
