Dies bedeutet nahezu eine Vervierfachung der Anzahl der Staaten in den vergangenen 60 Jahren. Die meisten der neuen Staaten entstanden durch Sezession. Zwei Ereignisse stechen dabei besonders hervor. Der Proze der Dekolonialisierung, auf dessen Höhepunkt es zu dutzenden Staatsneugründungen durch Sezession im Afrika der 1960er Jahre kam, und das Ende des Kalten Krieges, das zum Zusammenbruch der Vielvölkerstaaten Sowjetunion und Jugoslawien führte und etliche neue, durch Sezession entstandene Staaten hervorbrachte. In Deutschland mag das Phänomen Sezession als stärkste Form der Desintegration aufgrund der Geschichte einer langen Integration vom Deutschen Reich (1871) über den Föderalismus der Bundesrepublik, die Wiedervereinigung mit der ehemaligen DDR bis hin zur europäischen Integration nicht sonderlich gegenwärtig sein. Die offensichtliche Vernachlässigung der Thematik durch die deutsche Forschung ist dadurch aber nicht zu rechtfertigen. Das Streben nach Sezession stellt einen Hauptgrund für kriegerische Konflikte dar. 1994 hatten 49% der 39 weltweit stattfindenden Kriege einen sezessionistischen Hintergrund, 1996 waren es 40 %. Diese Arbeit will deshalb versuchen, den Ursachen von Sezessionen auf den Grund zu gehen. Wichtigster Akteur und treibende Kraft einer Sezession ist die dahinterstehende Sezessionsbewegung, die sogenannte distinct community . Viva Ona Bartkus hat in ihrem Werk "The dynamic of secession" von 1999 ein Konzept entwickelt, mit dessen Hilfe die Anreizstrukturen einer sezessionswilligen Gruppe analysiert werden können.
