1m Vorwort zur ersten Auflage kennzeichnete Max Wutz Zweck und Ziel seines Buches mit folgenden Worten: "Das vorliegende Buch will das Vakuumgebiet, soweit es sich urn das Erzeugen, Mes- sen und Aufrechterhalten emiedrigter Driicke sowie urn die dazu benotigte Arbeits- technik handelt, moglichst geschlossen darstellen. Es wendet sich an alle, die Experi- mente, Prozesse oder sonstige Arbeiten unter Vakuum ausftihren. Die Darstellung beriicksichtigt in gleicher Weise die theoretischen Grundlagen wie auch die Anforde- rungen der Praxis. Diesem Zweck dient auch die groBe Anzahl von erlautemden nume- rischen Beispielen. " DaB er damit einem Bedtirfnis nachgekommen war und das damals gesteckte Ziel erreicht hatte, zeigt sein Erfolg. Das Buch war zum deutschen Standardwerk des "Vakuums" gewor- den. Es war demgemaB bald vergriffen und fehlte mehr als ein Jahrzehnt auf dem Bticher- markt. Seit dem Erscheinen der ersten Auflage des Buches waren sowohl auf dem Gebiet der physi- kalischen Grundlagen als auch auf dem der anwendungsbezogenen Technik bedeutende Weiterentwicklungen und Standardisierungen zu verzeichnen; sie muBten in einer Neuauf- lage gebiihrend beriicksichtigt werden. So sind die Turbomolekularpumpe und die Kryo- pumpe mit zu den wichtigsten Vakuumerzeugem geworden; die Partialdruckmessung hat groBe Fortschritte gemacht; die standardisierten Kalibrierverfahren haben die MeBunsicher- heit der Druckmessung entscheidend verringert; die automatisierbare l. ecksuchtechnik mit Hilfe kommerzieller Heliurnlecksuchgerate hat ein weites Anwendungsfeld gefunden. Bei dieser Sachlage schien es angebracht, flir eine Neubearbeitung die umfassenden Kenntnisse von Spezialisten auf ihren Teilgebieten heranzuziehen und ihre tiberarbeiteten Beitrage in einer zweiten Auflage zu einem einheitlichen Ganzen zusammenzufligen.
