La recherche d'une grande loi de la Nature qui serait capable de d�crire tous les ph�nom�nes physiques et qui mettrait en relief leur unit� tout en r�v�lant leurs m�canismes profonds, hante l'esprit humain depuis des mill�naires. Mais ce n'est que depuis 1915, avec la Relativit� g�n�rale d'Albert Einstein, que la formulation de cette Th�orie unitaire est entr�e dans le domaine du possible.

En d�pit de nombreuses tentatives (Einstein consacra � la poursuite de ce grand dessein les trente derni�res ann�es de sa vie), toutes les recherches unitaires �taient jusqu'ici venues �chouer sur le seul crit�re qui fait la d�cision en science: la comparaison des r�sultats de calcul de la th�orie avec les donn�es exp�rimentales.

Jean E. Charon avait prononc�, d�s 1960, les premiers �l�ments d'une tentative unitaire cherchant � g�n�raliser � la fois la Relativit� g�n�rale et la Th�orie quantique. Durant treize ann�es, il a men� un travail exaltant, mais solitaire, sur la voie originale qu'il avait choisie. Il fut souvent combattu avec la m�me passion qu'il met lui-m�me � d�fendre ses id�es. Jusqu'� cette ann�e 1973, o� brusquement, il vit comment parvenir � son but. En quelques mois, les ordinateurs lui permirent alors de retrouver, comme solutions de ses �quations unitaires, toutes les donn�es exp�rimentales essentielles, de l'atomique au cosmologique. En m�me temps, en d�couvrant les processus microscopiques auxquels ob�issent les ph�nom�nes, il ouvrait un vaste champ nouveau de recherche, aux perspectives immenses. Ce sont ces r�sultats que rassemble le pr�sent ouvrage, qui va faire date dans le progr�s de la pens�e scientifique.

Physicien, Ing�nieur de l'�cole Sup�rieure de Physique et Chimie. Jean E. Charon s'est d'abord sp�cialis� dans les recherches nucl�aires au Commissariat � l'�nergie Atomique de Saclay. En 1959, il s'oriente vers la Physique fondamentale, et propose dans le prolongement des id�es einsteiniennes une nouvelle forme de Th�orie unitaire des ph�nom�nes physiques. Apr�s de longues ann�es de recherche pers�v�rante pour perfectionner et d�velopper ses premi�res id�es, il confirme num�riquement, en 1973, la validit� de ses �quations et fournit la premi�re Th�orie unitaire de l'Univers.

Jean E. Charon est �galement un �crivain et philosophe de renom. Il a publi� aux �ditions Albin Michel un Cours de th�orie relativiste unitaire et il nous propose aujourd'hui, dans son ouvrage L'Homme et l'Univers, une conception r�solument nouvelle du monde, qui repose sur les conclusions scientifiques de la pr�sente Th�orie unitaire.
