Diese Spracherwerbstheorien bilden das Fundament für mögliche Erklärungsmuster. Innerhalb der Spracherwerbsforschung fand immer wieder ein Paradigmenwechsel statt; der Ansatz des Behaviorismus wurde längst für obsolet erklärt und Piagets kognitivistische Theorie als eher unzutreffend kritisiert. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren dominierte das generative und nativistische Modell Chomsky's, das jedoch inhaltlich nie hinreichend definiert werden konnte und nur einen Teilaspekt des Spracherwerbs erklärt, und zwar die Kerngrammatik. Neuere theoretische Ansätze stehen nun im Vordergrund, die als usage-based und Selbstorganisation bekannt sind. Sie zeigen, wie sprachliche Strukturen mittels allgemeiner kognitiver Fähigkeiten aus der sozialen Interaktion und dem Input konstruiert werden können. Diese Arbeit betrachtet die wesentlichen Aspekte des kindlichen Erstspracherwerbs, jedoch kann die Darstellung der etablierten, teilweise hochkomplexen Spracherwerbstheorien den tiefergehenden Details aufgrund des begrenzten Rahmens der Arbeit nicht gerecht werden. Daher stellt diese Arbeit nicht den Anspruch sich als eine komplette Analyse dieser Theorien zu bezeichnen, sondern bietet lediglich eine zusammengefasste Übersicht über die Vielzahl der Theorien und die verschiedenen Forschungsergebnisse.
