Die Thermodynamik der irreversiblen Prozesse stellt einen relativ jungen Zweig der makroskopischen Physik dar, der in seinen Anwendungen ins- besondere fiir die Physikalische Chemie groBe Bedeutung erlangt hat. So wendet sich die vorliegende Monographie in erster Linie an Physikochemiker und Physiker. Aber auch Chemiker und Ingenieure mit griindlicher Aus- bildung in Physikalischer Chemie werden dem Text folgen konnen. Der Leser soUte die Differential- und Integralrechnung, die Elemente der Vektor- rechnung und linearen Algebra sowie die Grundziige der Mechanik und Elektrodynamik beherrschen. Zwei Dinge lagen mir bei der Abfassung des Buches besonders am Herzen: die kritische Darstellung der Grundlagen und die ausfiihrliche Schilderung der Anwendungen mit experimentellen Beispielen. Zunachst wird die Verbindung zwischen den Gedankengangen der klassi- schen Thermodynamik und denjenigen der thermodynamisch-phanomeno- logischen Theorie der irreversiblen Vorgange aufgezeigt. Dies erfordert eine Rekapitulation der wichtigsten GesetzmaBigkeiten der klassischen Thermo- dynamik. Dabei wird jedoch eine allgemeinere und pragnantere Formulie- rung der Grundgesetze angestrebt. Auf diese Weise solI dargelegt werden, wie klassische Thermodynamik und Thermodynamik der irreversiblen Pro- zesse in ihren Wurzeln zu einer Einheit verschmelzen. Auch wird der Giiltig- keitsbereich der thermodynamisch-phanomenologischen Theorie durch grundsatzliche Betrachtungen und einfache Beispiele so klar wie moglich abgesteckt. Die Anwendung der Theorie reicht von chemischen Reaktionen und Relaxationserscheinungen in homogenen Systemen bis zu Prozessen in Systemen mit elektromagnetischen Feldern und in anisotropen Medien. AusfUhrlich werden diejenigen Gebiete behandelt, fUr die prazise experi- mentelle Daten vorliegen. In anderen Fallen konnen nur Musterbeispiele durchgerechnet oder Resultate der Theorie kurz skizziert werden.
