Er hat über Jahre optische Studien betrieben, und er hat seine frühen Hauptwerke mit so durchdachten Frontispizen versehen, da von gezielten visuellen Strategien zu sprechen ist." (zit. n. Bredekamp, 2003, S.9). Entgegen der zahlreichen Abhandlungen über Thomas Hobbes, seinen moralischen, politischen und staatstheoretischen Überlegungen möchte ich mich in meiner Arbeit mit dem Visuellen beschäftigen. Im Mittelpunkt meiner Arbeit soll das Frontispiz der 1651 erschienenden Erstausgabe des Leviathan von Thomas Hobbes, der als Erfinder der neuzeitlichen Philosophie gilt (vgl. Kersting, 1994, S.59), stehen. "Kein Titelblatt eines philosophischen Werkes ist so einprägsam gestaltet wie das des Hobbesschen Leviathan, das, entworfen in der Spätblüte der Emblemkunst, Hobbes Staatsphilosophie bildlich darzustellen sucht." (zit. n. Brandt, 1996, S.29). Mit dem 1651 publizierten Leviathan begründete Hobbes die politische Moderne und liefert zugleich ein revolutionäres, "überragendes Werk der neuzeitlichen Philosophie" (vgl. Kersting, 1996, S.1ff). Hobbes beschreibt im Leviathan ein für seine Zeit neues Staatsmodell, welches der Bevölkerung Sicherheit bieten und damit Frieden bringen kann. Ich denke, dies ist für Hobbes das ma gebliche Ziel eines Staates, da zu seinen Lebzeiten sowohl auf dem europäische Festland als auch auf den Britischen Inseln Krisen, Revolten und Kriege herrschten. Im ersten Abschnitt meiner Arbeit werde ich den Historischen Kontext der Zeit in der Thomas Hobbes aufwuchs, lebte und welche ihn prägte darstellen,
