Das Problem des malum weckt nicht nur das Interesse von Philosophen und Theologen, sondern beschäftigt alle Menschen, die sich mit der Natur der Dinge auseinandersetzen. "Das Böse" - schon das Wort an sich stö t ab und zieht an, erschreckt und fasziniert. Kaum ein anderer Begriff kann die Ambivalenzen des menschlichen Daseins mitsamt seinen Abgründen so sehr fassen, kaum einer die menschliche Phantasie derart beschäftigen wie der des "Bösen". Das Gute erscheint demgegenüber eigentümlich blass [...]. (Frey/ Oberhansli-Widmer 2012). Besonders mit der christlichen Theologie scheint das Böse bzw. das Schlechte unvereinbar zu sein: "Und Gott sah alles, was er gemacht hatte, und siehe es war sehr gut" (Gen 1, 31). Thomas von Aquin - christlicher Theologe, Philosoph und Mitglied des Dominikanerordens - beschäftigte sich mit der Frage nach dem Bösen im christlichen Kontext. Sein Werk Summa contra gentiles1 (1261-1274) schrieb er für seine Dominikanerbrüder, die sich der Bekämpfung der Ketzerbewegung und Heidenmission hingaben. Dementsprechend lautet die deutsche Übersetzung des Titels Summe gegen die Heiden, welcher das Ziel seines dreibändigen Werkes bereits antizipiert, nämlich "die Wahrheit, die der katholische Glaube benennt, [...] darzulegen und dabei entgegenstehende Irrtümer auszuschlie en." (Scg I, 2, S. 7). Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff des Bösen bzw. des Schlechten hat eine lange Tradition und ist bis heute nicht abgeschlossen.
