In Tiger and My Eye Patch, classmates nickname the protagonist Pee Wee the Pirate because she wears an eye patch and glasses to correct her lazy eye. Spending summer vacation with her grandparents and their mischievous Great Dane named Tiger in Johnson City, New York, gives her a break from taunting. During Pee Wee's visit, Tiger causes several of his usual accidents due to his enthusiasm and size. When Tiger chases a squirrel into a busy street and causes traffic to halt, he needs serious help. It's the protagonist's distinct appearance that coaxes Tiger back to safety. Author and educator Colleen Lent uses her childhood experience being teased for her lazy eye to write this uplifting story for children, especially those self-conscious about a physical difference they believe separates them from their peers.

Tiger and My Eye Patch received the Literary Titan Gold Book Award (January 2, 2026), the Creative Child Magazine Top Choice Award (November 25, 2025), and the Golden Book Wizard Prize (October 28, 2025).

Lent, Colleen: - Colleen Lent remembers her first-grade classmates nicknaming her Pee Wee the Pirate and Crossed-Eyed Colleen because she wore an eye patch and glasses to correct her lazy eye. As a longtime elementary school teacher and independent journalist with graduate degrees in elementary education and communications, Colleen has written numerous articles about individuals conquering similar challenges and embracing kindness. Her stories have been featured in more than 20 different publications that include the New Hampshire Journal of Education, Woman's World, and Exceptional Parent Magazine. Also, some of her personal narratives have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. Colleen wrote Tiger and My Eye Patch based on her childhood reluctance to wear her corrective eyewear to avoid being taunted. Her picture book encourages children to perceive their unique traits as strengths. The story also pays tribute to fond memories of spending summers in Johnson City, New York with her grandparents and their Great Dane named Tiger. Colleen has enjoyed teaching students aged 7 to 70 in public school and college settings, volunteering for nonprofit organizations, and relaxing with her loved ones and rescue pups.
