The long-selling intermediate Japanese textbook "TOBIRA: Gateway to Advanced Japanese" has been renewed. "TOBIRA I: Intermediate Japanese" is a revised edition of its Lessons 1-8.


While the theme of each lesson remains the same, the goal is made clear with the "Dekiru List (Can Do List)." The reading materials have been updated, and activities encouraging discussions and presentations based on their topics have been incorporated. For the dialogue sections, listening exercises have been added to the existing practice format. These sections now also include activities for discussing related topics, not just conversation practice.


In addition, Lessons 1-8 have been organized into three Units, each culminating in a "Unit Project." These projects provide an opportunity to work on related topics while reflecting on the content covered in each lesson. In this way, the renewed "TOBIRA" offers a richer array of productive activities.

TANAKA

Born and raised in Japan, Tanaka has been running a YouTube channel "Learn Japanese with Tanaka san" since 2021 which boasts a subscriber count of 580,000 as of 2024. Her fun Japanese language educational content uses illustrations and animations and is popular with Japanese language learners around the world. She is also the author of "Onomatopoeia Friends: Illustrated book of Japanese onomatopoeic characters."
