Apres une longue eclipse, l'oeuvre de Tocqueville s'est imposee ces dernieres decennies comme une reference centrale dans la pensee francaise contemporaine. Tout se passe comme si, apres l'hegemonie du marxisme, la pensee de Tocqueville etait devenue le nouvel horizon indepassable de notre temps. Cependant, les raisons de ce retour de Tocqueville demeurent obscures: quant il n'est pas reduit a un discours ideologique, le renouveau tocquevillien francais est souvent assimile a une simple entreprise de restauration du liberalisme classique. Contre ces simplifications, ce livre fait ressortir les etapes qui ont conduit a la redecouverte de Tocqueville et explore les enjeux philosophiques de ces deplacements. Tous en montrant le role capital joue par R. Aron, on examine comment, des la premiere moitie du XXe siecle, la problematique tocquevillienne a ete mobilisee dans le cadre d'une critique de la modernite ou, au contraire, dans la perspective d'une legitimation des ideaux democratiques, centree sur la dynamique egalitaire. Enfin les presupposes du courant neo-tocquevillien , accordant une place capitale a la thematiqure de l'individu, sont portes au jour et discutes en prenant pour fil conducteur d'autres lectures de Tocqueville, issues notamment de la phenomenologie.
