Tolstoy His Life and Writings is a biographical and critical study of the life and works of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, written by Edward Garnett. The book provides a detailed account of Tolstoy's life, beginning with his childhood and early years, his education, and his experiences as a soldier in the Caucasus. It then goes on to explore his literary career, including his major works such as War and Peace and Anna Karenina, as well as his political and philosophical writings. Garnett examines Tolstoy's beliefs and the impact they had on his writing, particularly his rejection of conventional morality and his advocacy for nonviolence and simple living. The book also explores Tolstoy's relationships with his family, friends, and contemporaries, as well as his personal struggles and crises. Tolstoy is considered one of the greatest of all novelists with his collected works numbering 90 and War and Peace and Anna Karenina being counted as his two masterpieces. After finishing Anna Karenina Tolstoy renounced all his earlier works and wrote Conversion to explain his doctrines. Resurrection was his last major novel. By this time, Tolstoy started to himself more as a sage and moral leader than an artist. In 1901 the Russian Orthodox Church excommunicated the author. Tolstoy became seriously ill and he recuperated in Crimea. He then left his estate to his disciple Vladimir Chertkov so as to follow the urge to live as a wandering ascetic, Tolstoy died of pneumonia on November 20, 1910, at a remote railway junction.
