“No one hath seen beauty in its highest lustre who hath never seen it in distress.”

Tom Jonesby Henry Fielding, first published in 1749, is both a bildungsroman and a picaresque novel, charting the growth and adventures of its spirited protagonist. The novel follows the life of Tom, a foundling of mysterious origin, as he journeys through a series of comic and often scandalous escapades in search of identity, love and social acceptance. Blending sharp satire, romantic intrigue and keen observations of the eighteenth century English society, Fielding crafts a vivid, humorous narrative that explores themes of virtue, hypocrisy and human nature. Tom Jones remains a landmark in the evolution of the English novel.

Endorsements

“This novel is a testament to the power of literature to illuminate the human condition and engage readers for centuries to come.”

—The Medium

“Fielding's novel of Tom Jones is certainly one of the most admirable performances in the world. The structure of the story perhaps has never been equalled; nor is there any work that more frequently or more happily excites emotions of the most elevated and delicious generosity.”

—William Godwin

Henry Fielding (1707–1754), often referred to as the “father of the English novel,” was a pioneering novelist, playwright and magistrate whose influence profoundly shaped both literature and law. Born in Somerset and educated at Eton, he began his career writing satirical plays that boldly criticised political corruption. After the 1737 Licensing Act restricted theatrical expression, Fielding turned to fiction, where he made significant contributions to the development of the novel through his use of vivid characters, humour and innovative narrative techniques. Beyond his literary achievements, Fielding was a committed public servant. As Chief Magistrate of London, he championed legal reform and co-founded the Bow Street Runners, England’s first professional police force. Fielding’s fearless critique of injustice, his vivid storytelling and his efforts to improve society have earned him a lasting place in both literary history and the evolution of modern law.
