Kann man ohne Bedenken jede Region der Welt touristisch erschlie en oder sollten manche unberührt bleiben? Auf welche Weise findet Tourismus in solch schwer zugänglichen Gebieten wie dem Amazonas-Gebiet überhaupt statt? Und welche Perspektiven haben Indigene selbst zu dem Thema? Die Arbeit beginnt mit einem generellen Einblick in die Tourismusethnologie und deren Themen und Grundannahmen, um diese Fragestellungen dann anschlie end am Beispiel der Yanomami zu untersuchen. Als nächstes werden die Reisemöglichkeiten betrachtet, die zu den Yanomami bestehen (auf Ebene der Privatreisen und knapp auch auf Ebene der Feldforschung), um einen Überblick darüber zu geben, mit welchen Mitteln und unter welchen Voraussetzungen man überhaupt in ihr Gebiet gelangen kann. Im Folgenden wird auf die Perspektive der Yanomami selbst zum Thema eingegangen. So wird die Problematik zunächst von der Seite der Indigenen beleuchtet, bevor im nächsten Kapitel auf Erfahrungsberichte von bereits dort gewesenen, nicht-indigenen Besuchern eingegangen wird. Abschlie end wird auf Grundlage der bisher dargestellten Positionen und Thematiken verschiedene Kontroversen betrachtet, die das Reisen zu indigenen Gruppen generell ausgelöst hat und versucht zu einem Fazit zu gelangen, das zusammenfasst, was der Tourismus für indigene Gruppen im Allgemeinen und die Yanomami im Besonderen bedeutet und inwiefern er ihr Leben verändert hat.
