Come cogliere una poetica implicita come quella di Giovan Battista Marino con opportune categorie formali? Il vaglio di tre sfere di dibattito critico estremamente produttive nel Cinquecento italiano, quali la riflessione retorico-stilistica in ambito profano e sacro e la polemica sulla tragicommedia, ha consentito di individuare una comune condizione strutturale favorevole: la sistematica ricezione ed esegesi dei trattati retorici di Demetrio Falereo e di Ermogene di Tarso, in particolare dei precetti relativi alla sonorit�, ha avuto un ruolo centrale per lo sviluppo della poetica mariniana, contribuendo a spiegarne il funzionamento e suggerendo nuove prospettive di ricerca.
