Zunächst erfolgt eine Erläuterung der Systematik, in die die Spiele unterteilt werden. Das Ziel der Hausarbeit ist, einen groben Überblick zu geben, mit welchen Beschäftigungen sich die subarktischen Indianer in ihrer Freizeit befassten. Alle vorgestellten Spiele sind Spiele der erwachsenen Bevölkerung, die häufig auf Festen oder zu religiösen Anlässen praktiziert wurden. Kinder hatten viele andere Spiele, mit denen sie sich beschäftigten. Das Gebiet der Subarktis erstreckt sich von der Labrador-Halbinsel und Neufundland im Osten über einen Ausläufer, der südlich der Hudson Bay liegt, bis nach Alaska im Westen. Insgesamt ist das Areal über fünf Millionen Quadratkilometer gro . Die Bevölkerung lässt sich einteilen in die Sprachfamilien der Algonquin im Osten und der Athapasken im Nordwesten. Au erdem gibt es noch die Beothuk auf Neufundland, die jedoch Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts verdrängt und ausgerottet wurden.
