Train Whistles and Other Distant Memories contains memories of growing up in a small town in North Central West Virginia in the 1950's and 1960's. It was a time when people were not in such a hurry, when families and friends came together more often to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, and when fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other men in the community took boys under their wings and taught them by example skills, principles, and small-town values that would prepare them for adult life. Much of the book relates to fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities that are closely tied to the culture and traditions of West Virginia and that have, over the years, created strong multi-generational bonds, priceless memories, and a lifetime of enjoyment and satisfaction.

E. Randolph Underwood is a native of Salem, West Virginia, and a graduate of West Virginia University with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering. He practiced engineering for over forty years, performing civil and environmental engineering projects and consulting work throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Mr. Underwood is now retired and living in Martinsburg, West Virginia, with his wife Cathy. They have one daughter, Elizabeth, who currently resides in California with her husband, David.
